Portfolio - language

English or your native language? You can answer this by asking yourself who your target audience is. If you only want to work in your own country, then use your own language. But do you also want to work internationally, write in English. You can also consider making your website bilingual (but keep it clear).

For ankepanke.nl I choose to do English & Dutch. To reach both (potential) clients. Dutch and international. It's a hassle sometimes, because it's basically 2 websites, but I think it's worth it.

This blogpost is part of a short series about portfolio’s

Portfolio - design

The design of your website is the first thing people will see when they’re on your portfolio. What would you like it to say? I don’t know about you, but every now and again, it itches and I want to do everything differently. I get an idea and I want to change everything. So don’t take this blogpost to literally, at the moment I have a preference for a clear design, but that might change in a few weeks.

Portfolio - description

What kind of information to you put in your description? Keep in mind this is also searchable text. Keep it short, but clear. A few elements that are wise to include:

COPYRIGHT
It’s always a good idea to add a watermark on your works, but also add it in the text. It’s better to say it once too many, than not enough. Unfortunately it happens way too often people not understanding they can’t just download you images from you website. Text like ’©ankepanke.nl Please don’t copy, edit or (digitally of printed) use without my permission. And when you do (get my permission), always credit. Thanks!’ informs them (and might demotivate them to download).

Portfolio - works

What to you put on your portfolio? There are many different opinions about what’s best. From a maximum of 15 works to everything you’ve ever made and show your process to concentrate on one style. I’ve tried out various versions over the years and what I now have, might change in a few weeks. So there isn’t really on right way, you have to decide for yourself. Sorry if this isn’t very helpful :)

Personally I have the issue that I like so many things. From graphic design, illustrations to pattern design. People tell me that it doesn’t matter what I make, you can clearly see it mine, but I often find it very different. At the moment I have my portfolio divided in genre, so: patterns, logo’s, letters, illustrations, books, greeting cards + birth announcements, sketches and snailmail. For the patterns I’ve also created a separate website (because I didn’t feel I could give them the attention they deserved without becoming too predominant).

MAXIMUM OF 15 WORKS
Advantages short and sweet, especially big companies who don’t have a lot of time to browse extensive portfolio’s will appreciate this.
Disadvantages really limited and hard to choose, what 15 works do you show?
